Last Night's Recap - January 28

So...last night was all kinds of messed up. We had a record number of teams at The Bard's Town (23!). We ran our of picture sheets, so we had to improvise and share. What wonderful players we have. Over at Molly's, we had a little trouble with the audio round, so we just decided to skip Round 5 all together. Hey, it happens. We'll try it again next week and make it work. No pictures of the winning teams. We'll work on that as well.

We did have a question about our '90s round and the predecessor of Darth Vader in 1999's The Phantom Menace. The question at hand? "What was the name of Darth Vader’s predecessor with trademark a black and red face, horns on his head, and who used a double edged light saber in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace?" We'll let you be the judge.

Ray Park as Darth Maul
Christopher Lee as Darth Tyranus
At Molly's, the winning team was Turn On The Heat with 93 points.  At The Bard's Town, Six Hour Peacock had 94 points.

  1. How about a citation for the question of what is the second busiest airport in Kentucky. I have found that Louisville is #1 because of UPS, Cincy is number two.

  2. Good catch, Chris. Just checked the question. We didn't specify passenger flights. SDF certainly has more flights than CVG when factoring in UPS.

  3. Looking back, I will admit the question was worded ambiguously. I wrote the question and I'll take the blame as passenger, cargo, etc was not specified. I used the word "operations" which in the normal world, isn't very indicative but in my world, it is total number of planes, from the smallest Cessna to the biggest 747. Forgive me as sometimes I forget that not everybody works in the ATC world. I pulled the numbers from the site at work. If you want to google ATADS, then you may or may not be able to access it, as I can from work.

That being said, the numbers are as follows: the total number of airport landings and takeoffs for CVG were 133,619 and SDF was 148,429. So, if we were to go by that number, then yes, SDF was in fact busier in 2014. However, when I wrote the question, I was using the ATADS numbers of total operations, including radar operations. That figure for 2014 was CVG at 222,736 and SDF at 205,454 so with those factors included, CVG was in fact the busiest in Kentucky with SDF taking second place.

In retrospect, the question was at worst misleading and at best ambiguous. Any future ATC related questions will be worded to not be as such. My apologies for any confusions. I hope this helps clarify things. See you guys next week!
