Fun Fact Friday Part III - The Colonel

"Colonel" Harland Sanders wasn’t born or raised in Kentucky, but he did become a Kentucky Colonel, hence his frequently-used title. It wasn’t until 1952, when he was 62 and completely broke, that his friend Pete Harman helped him create the first KFC (Harman also came up with the slogan "Finger Lickin' Good"). The original Sanders Court & Cafe was located in Corbin, Kentucky and had been doing steady business, but was nothing to write home about. The first restaurant to sport the Kentucky Fried Chicken name was actually located near Salt Lake City, Utah. A few years later Dave Thomas, of Wendy’s fame, a young Vietnam vet at the time, ended up working for Sanders and made several innovative changes. Remember the giant rotating bucket outside your local KFC? That was Dave's idea.

Last Night's Recap - January 28

So...last night was all kinds of messed up. We had a record number of teams at The Bard's Town (23!). We ran our of picture sheets, so we had to improvise and share. What wonderful players we have. Over at Molly's, we had a little trouble with the audio round, so we just decided to skip Round 5 all together. Hey, it happens. We'll try it again next week and make it work. No pictures of the winning teams. We'll work on that as well.

We did have a question about our '90s round and the predecessor of Darth Vader in 1999's The Phantom Menace. The question at hand? "What was the name of Darth Vader’s predecessor with trademark a black and red face, horns on his head, and who used a double edged light saber in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace?" We'll let you be the judge.

At Molly's, the winning team was Turn On The Heat with 93 points.  At The Bard's Town, Six Hour Peacock had 94 points.

Tuesday Night Recap - January 27

Much like last week, The Granville had a smaller, more intimate crowd with a close game at the end. The "Man"-O-"Man" and Just for Kicks rounds seemed to be the easiest and/or most fun rounds of the night. A visiting team from DiOrio's, Hit It and Acquit It, snagged with win by six points.

At Molly's, Say Car Ramrod led for the first half, then was overtaken by We Don't Know (who won last Wednesday night). There were far more folks than we realized that have read the Fifty Shades book series. You guys got the question right, but what's that say about your taste in literature? In the end, the Snow DMins walked away victorious, three points ahead of their rivalries, the Snow Angels.

Movie Monday #4 - Answers

Congratulations to Heather Macey (again!). She won our fourth Google-Proof Movie Monday.

The first movie is Accepted with Ann Cusack. Movie two is Beautiful Girls featuring Rosie O'Donnell. The third movie is Cutthroat Island with Geena Davis. Movie four is Dick Tracy with Madonna. Last is Point Break with Lori Petty. Each of those actors was in A League of Their Own.

Four Pegs Recap - January 25

We had another big crowd tonight. It was great to see all the new teams.  This week's winners never looked back once they grabbed the lead.  Congratulations to Beercat for their win.

As far as tonight's questions go. Several of the teams had some difficulty from our Neighbors to the North tonight. Also, a lot of teams forgot about the second Bill and Ted movie, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.

DiOrio's Recap - January 23

Last night saw the end of the Famous People Anagram run (thank goodness) and the return of PJ. With the holidays and some traveling, it's been five weeks since he hosted the quiz. It's good to have him back. 

Maybe that's why the place was packed. DiOrio's isn't exactly a big venue, but we fit 18 teams in there. Team Low Ballin' snagged the win with 97 points, which is a DiOrio's record!

We had an interesting challenge about our Monopoly round. We said Connecticut has the highest per capita income of any state in the US. Someone challenged with Maryland. They have the highest median income. Sure. But the answer to our question is clearly Connecticut. And it has been...for a while. Also, Maryland is nowhere to be found on the Monopoly board.

Catching Up - Recaps from January 21 and 22

We were back at The Granville on Tuesday after last week's UofL-game-forced-hiatus. It was a small crowd, but an intense one. The winning team, Tequila Mockingbird, came back from behind and devastated the competition by winning the game by one point.

Over at Molly Malone's, Scott took Tuesday night off and Chris hosted the game. A new team, the Mario Bros won. We always love when that happens.

Hump Day brought some high scores. The winning teams at Molly's (We Don't Know) and The Bard's Town (High Utilizers) both walked away with 96 points, just FOUR points shy of a perfect game. That ain't bad!

Movie Monday #3 - Answers

The first movie is Die Hard 2: Die Harder with William Sadler. Movie two is Flubber featuring Clancy Brown. The third movie is Phenomenon with Jeffrey DeMunn. Four Pegs is becoming a popular venue for trivia. We had another packed house tonight with standing room only for some teams. Good rule of thumb, arrive early, get some food and save your table.

We switched up the picture round this week and a lot of the teams had perfect scores.  It was a race to the finish for our winner.  Several teams did very well in the last round, but our winner, Forever Alone & Friends, stood above the rest with 45 points in the final round to take the win.

Fun Fact Friday Part II - Root Beer

Modern root beer is slightly different from the original stuff made back in the 1700s, because in 1960 the FDA banned sassafras oil and safrole in commercially mass-produced foods and drugs. Safrole is a naturally-occurring oil in sassafras bark, but it has been deemed carcinogenic and has been used to make Ecstasy. Safrole also is banned for use in soap and perfumes. In 1994, the ban was changed. You can now mass produce and sell foods with sassafrass oil as long as the safrole has been removed.

If We Lose I Go Into Labor

It was a fairly uneventful night. No major sound issues. It's almost like we know what we're doing. It was the second night in a row we talked about Eddie Izzard.We're not sure what that means. Looking forward to it again next week.

Molly Malone's Recap - January 13

After a change in the schedule, there was no game at The Granville Inn tonight. Maybe next week.

Our only game took place at Molly Malone's with a full house. A total of 17 teams battled for bragging rights and a $25 gift certificate. Butt Mustache Lundergan-Grimes took home the win with a lead of 12 points. They're also currently tied for first in league rankings.

 

We had a quick debate about oleo, mayo, and EVOO; it was discovered soccer fields and field hockey fields are slightly different; and The Breakfast Club consisted of a Brain, Athlete, Basket Case, Princess, and Criminal.

Movie Monday #2 - Answers

Congratulations to Heather Macey...again. She is the winner of our second Google-Proof Movie Monday. She got the answer, Pitch Perfect, in less than 7 hours.

The first movie is Bad Teacher with John Michael Higgins. Movie two is The Pacifier featuring Brittany Snow. The third movie is The Help with Anna Camp. Movie four is Up in the Air starring Anna Kendrick. Last, but certainly not least, is What to Expect When You're Expecting with Rebel Wilson. Each of those actors was in Pitch Perfect.

Four Pegs Recap - January 11

Tonight's game at Four Pegs went very well. The heat was on, so that's a solid success. We had a great crowd with some impressive scores. Congratulations to the winning team, Suk it Trebek.

Movie Monday #1 - Answers

Congrats to Heather Macey. She is the winner of our first Google-Proof Movie Monday. Another one is coming up in just two short days. For now, here is this week's answer.

The first movie is Batman Returns with Liam Neeson. The second movie is Die Hard With A Vengeance with Samuel Leroy Jackson. Movie number three was a tough one (It's an underrated movie and the picture we provided was an out-of-focus action scene). It is John Carter featuring Dominic West. The fourth movie is Leon: The Professional starring Natalie Portman. The fifth movie is X-Men with Ray Park. Each of those actors was in The Phantom Menace.

DiOrio's Recap - January 8

Last night at DiOrio's a crowd of super-intelligent people braved the cold weather to take advantage of some of the great $3 pints and test their knowledge at trivia.

It was quite an interesting night with a few challenges, one team requested our dating services in order to find a girlfriend, and there were some questionable morals about family secrets as well.  One team had some height problems but we were there to support them all the same. 

With a good effort, but ultimately coming up short, O Gawd No came in 3rd place with a total of 65 points.  Cosby's Kids maintained a steady game and finished 2nd with 70 points.  However in the end, it would be Turd Ferguson that would bring the trophy home with a very strong final round and a final score of 75 points.  Will Turd Ferguson defend their crown, or will your team be able to overthrow the champions?  Come next week and find out!

Wednesday Night Recap - January 7

Annie's back and Chris* is here to stay! There were some technical hiccups at The Bard's Town, but with the help of The Bard's Town's own Scot, we got it all worked out. That PA system will forever be an enigma.
 

Drinkers Not Thinkers secured the win at Molly's. Kevin Bacon and Eggs took the lead at The Bard's Town. And we're full speed into a new season of scores.

*A little note from Chris after his first night: "I had alot of fun hosting trivia for the first time last night. Nathan Stalvey, you were right, The Bard's Town players are a super fun group of people; also they take no prisoners! There were a couple rookie mistakes made by me and there were some technical snags that will be ironed out by next Wednesday. Thank you to Louisville Trivia and to Scott Gibson for giving me this opportunity, I look forward to this in the months ahead! Also, thank you to The Bard's Town players for your patience and we'll see you all next week!"

Last Night's Recap - January 6

Tuesday trivia is back! We played the game at Molly Malone's and The Granville. Oddly enough, there was a team called Tequila Mockingbird at both locations. Is there something we missed, or is this just strange coincidence?

The first round was (in our opinion) too easy. We'll work on that. Several of you guys must have tuned out last year, because the year in review round was a killer. The average score for that round was 4.8.

There were a couple of challenges. How did Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo really die? Was it an ambiguous death? Will we ever know? And in a speedy decision at Molly's last night, we decided to accept Pocahontas as an answer for the last question. That decision was, sadly, wrong. The baptism of Pocahontas was represented on the BACK of the $20 bill. Our question asked what historical women have been featured on the FRONT. Luckily, this didn't change the outcome of the game.

The team name of the week (month/year/eternity?) was the Scott Gibson Fan Club.  Well done.

The Nerds put up a good fight at The Granville, winning with a tie-breaker. Cloverfield of Dreams won at Molly Malone's with a whopping seven points more than the second place team. Congratulations to our winning teams.

We had a full house tonight (at one point a few folks were standing). A lot of you guys had a blast with the state abbreviation/chemical element round. Maybe it was the hint we threw out earlier in the day? No one got the Stuff the Magic Dragon question right, so here's a little knowledge. And the first three questions in the final round? Sorry about that. Congrats to Forever Alone and Friends for their first place win. Dem Boomers grabbed second place and 4 1/2 Pegs snagged third. Oh, and Happy Birthday Tyrel. Did we spell that right?

Welcome to the new Louisville Trivia blog. We're excited to offer a new way to interact with folks in more than 140 characters. Some people don't like Facebook and/or Twitter (and they may not like blogs either, but oh well...), so we've designed this to go hand-in-hand with our other social media efforts, yet not overwhelm all our followers.

We're still working on ideas and ironing out our plans for 2015 and beyond, but here are a few things you can look forward to with this new blog.
