Granville 1/12/16 Recap

We had another small game at the Granville last night with only three teams. Despite the small number of teams we still had a good time. It was rough getting going for our teams, but we pulled through. After round one our eventual winner, The Granville-billies, took the lead and never looked back. We are still waiting on the gift certificates to come in so our winner last night walked away with $25. Hopefully, next week we will move forward with our winners taking away a $25 gift certificate. Still a great time to come out to the Granville.

We had a small game to start the new year at the Granville after our three week hiatus. First round was rough, but our three teams rebounded from there with perfect scores the next two rounds and good scores the rest of the way. Three seemed to be the theme of the night, three teams, 3 common bonds, and movie three-scriptions. Our returning team, the Honeybadgers, jumped off to a quick lead and held that until round 5, but there victory was snatched from them in the last round by the winners, Welcome Back, Kotter.

You can see the victors sporting their spoils from the win $25. Starting next week our 1st place team will be receiving a $25 gift certificate along with swag. Great time to join us at the Granville.

Granville Update 7/7/15

Last night proved that you don't need a large crowd to have fun with trivia. Our game started with another patron of the bar offering to buy a beer if anyone could answer his sports question. After several rounds of open guessing the teams threw in the towel and our host earned the free beer. We only have 3 teams playing last night and for awhile we had the whole bar to ourselves. The first couple of rounds went really well for everyone with the scores being extremely close. Unfortunately, we lost steam in the music round. Our contestants had trouble with our midnight round, even when giving the chance for extra points. Coincidentally enough all of our teams had similar troubles so our scores were still very tight going into the last round. Our game was decided by one question. Our second place team got the question correct and then marked it out for the wrong one opening the door for our winner, Better Late Than Pregnant.  Next week is our Tournament, but we will still be having trivia at Granville for those who are interested.

Granville Recap 6/30

We had a late start to trivia this Tuesday. We waited to watch the USA Women's team pull out a thrilling victory against Germany first. After the "USA" chats died down we were able to get started. We had a small but dedicated crowd stay for trivia. We had a couple of returning teams, a new team, and a visiting team from Molly Malone's. We did run into some snags with our Last Line Round. Apparently, most of the movies came out before the bulk of our contestants were born which led to some funny answers that can't be repeated.

Our visiting team, We Don't Know, took the lead early and never let it go.  The rest of our teams put up a fighting pulling close to our leader several times, but ultimately the winning team pulled it out by one correct answer in the final round.

Playing Catch Up

It's been a busy couple of weeks. We're working on getting some new venues and many of us have been doing some early-summer traveling. Schedules are nearly back to normal, so maybe we'll jump back on the blog a little more often. We're also working on a couple of new ideas for the blog and we're hoping to revive Movie Monday and Fun Fact Friday very soon. Until then, here's a quick recap of a few games from the recent past.

Last night was Waterfront Wednesday, the one event in Louisville that completely and consistently drains attendance at trivia. Both Molly's and The Bard's Town had 10 teams. A truly sad showing.

The Blues round was very polarizing! Teams either loved it or hated it, which is a huge improvement over last week's one hit wonders of the 60's, which was so universally hated that it is safe to say, everybody is tired of one hit wonders in the music rounds.  There won't be any of those for a long time.  The movie mash-up round was a hit!  Even if the teams didn't get the answer right, everyone enjoyed the storylines.  Overall, a great and fun week!

Over at Molly's the winning team was What Appears to be a Drawing of a Penis.  They took an early lead and never let go.  With an insane score on the last round like the one they had, we're not entirely convinced they have an actual baby in the carrier but a Google computer disguised as a baby!  Secret weapon perhaps?

At The Bard's Town, Say Our Name, Bitch won the game by 11 points. We didn't get a picture, but you can see their winning photo from last week posted below. They've won plenty of times. We had a tie breaker for second and third. Even though they didn't win (they placed fifth with two other teams), He Liked It and Put a Ring on It was by far the best team name this week. Congrats to the newly engaged couple, Anna and Michael.

Tie Breaker Question: Did you know, according to something we saw on the History Channel a few years ago, if a man uses a cell phone for four hours a day, on average, his sperm count decreases by 25%? Who knew? And we've got no clue if that's 25% reduction each day or over his lifetime. That's just the number given to us by that random TV show.


Tuesday night at The Granville it was a very close game. For the bulk of the game almost all of the teams were within 5 points of each other. Stephen Hawking Karaoke Machine started off strong with 2 perfect rounds. The first 2 rounds went over well with everyone as we had really good scores in those rounds. Things slowed down during the picture round, but it was a hard fought battle until the very end. Murder is All She Wrote took the game in the last round after playing second fiddle most of the game.

At Molly's on Tuesday, it was a good match up and one of the two teams with Duggar-themed names (19 Counts of Molestation and Counting) ended up winning after scoring 37 in the final round. We got a kick out of The Moops, though. Not surprisingly, people especially enjoyed the beer round, though the Brewer/Brewster question stumped a lot of folks, as did the beer that made Milwaukee famous.

Weekly Recap

Tuesday night was another small game at the Granville. The good news is that we were able to get some of the Granville employees in the game playing. It was a back and forth game between two teams with the Granville-billies pulling out the win in the last round.

Over at Molly's, most folks confused St. Nicholas with St. Jude (simple mistake), did better than expected in the Keri Russell round, and knew more about the Bo Knows commercials than we would have thought. Several teams competed for the win, but in the last round, We Don't Know dominated.

We moved things around on Wednesday. Chris is now at Molly's and Ben is now at The Bard's Town. We'll see how that works out.

Things seemed to go well The Bard's Town. We had 13 teams, which is a big improvement from the past couple of weeks (we'll blame the Derby events and great weather). The fictional games round was tough, but people enjoyed the '90s alternative Weird Al polka round. Not many Google+ users, but at least that question resulted in a lot of creative answers. If She Were Shorter and Shaved the Mustache started a bit slow but walked away a winner this week.

At Molly's, we had 15 teams! It was a very tight game with the leaders going back and forth all night. The  Louisville Strugglers had an amazing last round, taking them from 8th all the way to second but they were unable to hold off the Sea Shanties and Wet Panties, who took hold of the prize.

At Great Flood Brewery, we had a smaller turn out than last week, but we finally got the sound worked out. There was a lot of uproar about a couple of the answers (The Beatles question, the Bears 1985 Super Bowl win). In the end, Natalie Portmanteau reigned victorious.

Over at DiOrio's, The 2 Non Blondes defeated 10 other teams. What, you guys thought two women couldn't dominate a sports and rec round?

Cinco de Mayo Recap

It was Cinco de Mayo last night, which means the crowds were a bit smaller, but we still have a few teams show up who weren't interested in the typical tequila shots and Mariachi music vibe.

At Molly's, the game went fast. With only 11 teams, it was one of the smallest crowds we've seen in a while. I maybe more focused because as I was finishing my regular bourbon and ginger ale one of the teams bought me another. Much appreciated!

The State of TV was a big hit overall, and we'll be doing that round again this week. The audio round, which was a request by one of our teams, was enjoyed by everyone who was alive in the '80s, but at least one of the teams was too young to remember many of the songs. Round Five "In Da Club" was a surprise hit, with the lowest score at 7 points. We had no clear winner throughout the game, as the lead kept changing hands. In the end, We Don't Know grabbed the win with 39 points in the final round.

It was a hectic game over at The Granville. The first three rounds went well. The music round was fun, but somewhat challenging. We had a VERY rowdy crowd show up later in the game that made the last two rounds very tough, but we got through it. For some reason the crowd hasn't been connecting with the questions as well as in the past resulting in some lower scores. If you have ideas to why, let us know! From the first round, winning team SPIT seemed to dominate the game. Unfortunately, no winning team photo this week.

ICYMI: Last Night's Recap - 4/28/15

We had a full house last night at The Granville with plenty of folks playing the game. It was a younger crowd so some of the movie questions were a bit too old for them. Scores were a bit lower than usual, and the team with the most points had too many team members. The winning team was the Honeybadgers.

Over at Molly Malone's, the crowd was smaller than usual and we had a few folks throughout the game who didn't realize they weren't supposed to yell out answers, hum the theme songs to movies, or continuously whistle to the tune of "Let's Go Yankees!" All-in-all it was a good evening, despite Scott's inability to pronounce words like chauffeur and diplopia as well as names like Blackthorne, Chatham, and Lorre. The winning team, Don't Rain on My Pegasus Parade, struggled in the beginning, but took charge in the final round and reigned (pun intended) victorious.

We had several new teams at The Granville, thanks in part to a very enthusiastic patron. One of our new teams actually took the win tonight, Smart Belwas. SPIT had the most points, but had 7 players so they did not qualify. Overall it was a great night.

At Molly Malone's we had 20 teams, several of which were new as well.  The Six Letter P Words round was a big hit. The Picture round of albums featuring animals on the covers was hit or miss. Some folks really enjoyed it, while others grunted and groaned as they turned it in. In the last round, folks were split when asked about an inscription about liberty.

At Molly's, there was quite a lot of competition, but in the end, Troll Toll gained the lead and walked away with bragging rights, even though half the team left before grabbing the gift card or a quick picture.

Recap for April 14, 2015

We had a great night of trivia at both venues last night.  There were several new teams at The Granville this week and everyone enjoyed the game. Scores were a bit lower than in past weeks, but that happens from time to time. The Terrible Music round went very well as well as the Jeopardy! round. One team that pretty much led the whole time, The Smartest People at the Granville Inn, faltered in the last round.  This week's winner was Honeybadgers.

Over at Molly Malone's we started off a bit small, but all the way up to round three we just kept adding teams. We had some fun with the Massive Headaches round, despite some switched up answers. The Terrible Music round, aka Massive Headaches Part II, was a big hit. Most teams scored pretty highly on it. There were three or four teams that went head-to-head last night, but Iran (So Far Away) walked/ran away with the win.

Last Night's Recap - March 24, 2015

After tons of weather issues and last week's cancellation for St. Patrick's Day, we were glad to be back last night at The Granville and Molly Malone's. The night was filled with Pop Culture Trivia, a random audio round, and some basic Indiana Jones chronology.

The winning teams from both bars were quite apparent from early on. Over at The Granville, Honeybadgers took the win. At Molly's a rowdy Werewolves, Not Scarewolves walked away victorious, even though they were about to riot during the "Vanity Fair" question. Becky Sharp is the heroine, not Becky Thatcher. That's a different book altogether.

Last Night's Recap - February 24

We had another full house at Molly Malone's last night with 20 teams, despite the series finale of Parks & Rec (thank you DVR!). The first round was a tough one. The average score was 5.75. The pace quickly picked up with Big Birdman grabbing the lead until the final round (a common problem for that crew). Bye Bye Lil' Sebastian, a team who saw second and third place throughout the game, dominated the final round and took home the win.

Over at The Granville, we had a good rebound crowd from last week's snow. The teams started out a little slow in round one with lower scores. The Honeybadgers were the first to comeback. The Inspiration round was a good round for most teams. Last week's winners, Hit It and Acquit It, made a late run, but it wasn't enough to take the win from the Honeybadgers.

Molly Malone's Recap - February 17

It's always hard to tell what we're going to get when the city is blanketed in snow. Sometimes we have one team show up and sometimes we have a full house. And that's exactly what happened last night. We had to cancel at The Granville because we had so few teams. Over at Molly's we had 19 teams show up initially. Sixteen of them finished the game.

It was a tough start, since no one got the first question right. Things smoothed out until round 3 when the Rachel McAdams picture round had Paul Rudd answers. Overall it was a good game, if not a bit harder than usual. The winning team, 50 Shades of No Chemistry, was in the lead in the first round, tapered off in the middle, and came back for the victory when it counted.

Tuesday Night Recap - February 10

Last night at The Granville, we had an abbreviated game due to the UK game on the big screens. We got in five rounds, including the hard-to-hear-in-a-crowd audio round.

Meanwhile, at Molly Malone's in St. Matthews, we played the full game, but took a quick break to watch the Wildcats eek out another win in their undefeated season. The inappropriate innuendo-laced picture round seemed to go over well. We need to get you folks reading more books, though.

The winners this week at The Granville were Hit It & Acquit It with a perfect score in the final round. Over at Molly's, We Don't Know walked away victorious, also with a perfect score in the final round.

Tuesday Night Recap - January 27

Much like last week, The Granville had a smaller, more intimate crowd with a close game at the end. The "Man"-O-"Man" and Just for Kicks rounds seemed to be the easiest and/or most fun rounds of the night. A visiting team from DiOrio's, Hit It and Acquit It, snagged with win by six points.

At Molly's, Say Car Ramrod led for the first half, then was overtaken by We Don't Know (who won last Wednesday night). There were far more folks than we realized that have read the Fifty Shades book series. You guys got the question right, but what's that say about your taste in literature? In the end, the Snow DMins walked away victorious, three points ahead of their rivalries, the Snow Angels.

Catching Up - Recaps from January 21 and 22

We were back at The Granville on Tuesday after last week's UofL-game-forced-hiatus. It was a small crowd, but an intense one. The winning team, Tequila Mockingbird, came back from behind and devastated the competition by winning the game by one point.

Over at Molly Malone's, Scott took Tuesday night off and Chris hosted the game. A new team, the Mario Bros won. We always love when that happens.

Hump Day brought some high scores. The winning teams at Molly's (We Don't Know) and The Bard's Town (High Utilizers) both walked away with 96 points, just FOUR points shy of a perfect game. That ain't bad!

Last Night's Recap - January 6

Tuesday trivia is back! We played the game at Molly Malone's and The Granville. Oddly enough, there was a team called Tequila Mockingbird at both locations. Is there something we missed, or is this just strange coincidence?

The first round was (in our opinion) too easy. We'll work on that. Several of you guys must have tuned out last year, because the year in review round was a killer. The average score for that round was 4.8.

There were a couple of challenges. How did Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo really die? Was it an ambiguous death? Will we ever know? And in a speedy decision at Molly's last night, we decided to accept Pocahontas as an answer for the last question. That decision was, sadly, wrong. The baptism of Pocahontas was represented on the BACK of the $20 bill. Our question asked what historical women have been featured on the FRONT. Luckily, this didn't change the outcome of the game.

The team name of the week (month/year/eternity?) was the Scott Gibson Fan Club.  Well done.

The Nerds put up a good fight at The Granville, winning with a tie-breaker. Cloverfield of Dreams won at Molly Malone's with a whopping seven points more than the second place team. Congratulations to our winning teams.
