Tuesday Night Recap - Molly's 8/4

It was an interesting night at Molly's starting with some behind-the-scenes mishaps and some crazy weather. We lost our power cord for the sound system. It just vanished. Luckily, it was easily replaced in time to start the game. We had a downpour moments before the game began with harsh lightning all evening. That's not something you like to see when you're holding a wired microphone for two hours.

The game itself was fairly straightforward, but we did have a team stand out from the rest. We Don't Know dominated the first four rounds with a perfect game. They missed two questions in the fifth, and barely held onto the lead at the end of the game (and if you ask the second place team, who lost by only three points, it all came down to bad wording on a Round 6 question).

Folks seemed to enjoy the Possessive Movie Title round, despite the trick question of Monster's Ball vs. Monsters, Inc. or University. The Pee Wee's Big Adventure audio clue brought audience participation, applause, and laughter. That's what we aim for!

I forgot to get a photo of the winning team tonight with my own camera, but I did take a picture with one of theirs, so maybe they'll post it. I did grab a shot of that Granita I was enjoying. Mixed berry and rum? Thank you, I'll have another!

Four Pegs Recap - July 27

It was another hot summer night at Four Pegs with a great, energetic crowd. Brandon was off celebrating his birthday, so we called in a sub. The game started a bit slow when the highest score in Round 1 was just 7 points. Folks did fairly well on the Geography round. Sadly, New Hampshire touches neither New York nor New Jersey. Teams who missed that one should definitely visit the northeast. Beautiful country up there.

We got a few teams with 9 points in the Picture Round, but no one knew Flea's real name. Speaking of names, the Guys Named Jeff Round was hit or miss. At least everyone knew Jeff Goldblum.

Sports? My favorite response was "This ain't that kinda bar!" Speaks for itself. It was Round 5 and that was also the average score for that round. We moved quickly and carefully to our Final Round. most of you guys knew both of the three finger salutes we asked you about (and thanks for your PG answers). There was another sports question that threw most people off. Plant names were a bit difficult. But you guys redeemed yourselves with the final question, another shot at geography.

At the end of the game, even though We Know Jack! and Forever Alone and Friends put up some good fights throughout the night, Polar Bear With Me walked away the winners. (Sadly, I forgot to snap a winning photo, so that Jeff Goldblum pic will just have to do!)

Tuesday Night Recap - Molly Malone's

It was another busy night at Molly's and a great start to the new season. The team names, while fairly great, were somewhat predictable given the state of current events. Jared from Subway and Bill Cosby were the butt of many jokes.

The first round went well with some fairly high scores throughout. Not enough people knew about Nancy Drew's hometown, though. Round Two gave the group a little R&R, the night's second mention of Robert Redford, and some info about the Hood to Coast Relay Race. Round Three was all about Extreme Sports and a little Vanilla Ice, because why not? At the halfway point, The Revenge of Butt Mustache had risen above the competition and stood alone in the lead.

Next up was the Audio Round, titled "In the Middle of the Night," a title taken from Billy Joel's "River of Dreams," a highly underrated song in my book. The crowd was split (as is usually the case with audio rounds), but there was some common ground with hits like Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight" and CCR's "Midnight Special." The one that stumped the most teams was Coldplay's "Midnight," a rather haunting auto-tuned song from the band's album "Ghost Stories."

Given the (inter)national fame of Discovery Channel's Shark Week, Round Five was all about the ocean's greatest predators. Being a Round Five category, the questions were a bit tougher, including the question about Back to the Future II (see below) and the one about Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.

At the end of Round Five, The Revenge of Butt Mustache was still in the lead, but only by one point. Round Six, as it is designed to be, was a difficult one. Teams struggled to come up with Hillary and Bill Clinton's granddaughter's name (some said Bart or Joe), the nursery rhyme characters taking a ride in a pea green boat, and the Three Principles of Planetary Motion.

In the end, Butt Mustache failed to achieve the first win of the season. That honor went to In Dog Beers, We've Had Just One, a team that had a strong start, a meager journey through the middle rounds, and a strong finish. The high score was 77.

It was a busy night at Molly's last night. We had 23 teams playing the game and the place was packed! The first round was well-received, and we even had someone cheer about celiac disease, which was unexpected. The Not Related Picture Round was a big hit with an average score of 9.5. The space round had mixed reviews, but Jurassic TARC nailed it, which rocketed them to the lead (for just that one round). The O.K. Animals round started off fairly easy, but teams quickly realized it wasn't a cake walk. Katydid and Komodo Dragon were the most-missed answers. Teams did fairly well in the final round, but it was I Guess 7 Is Enough that took away the win with a total of 91 points (47 of which were gained in the last round).

Playing Catch Up

It's been a busy couple of weeks. We're working on getting some new venues and many of us have been doing some early-summer traveling. Schedules are nearly back to normal, so maybe we'll jump back on the blog a little more often. We're also working on a couple of new ideas for the blog and we're hoping to revive Movie Monday and Fun Fact Friday very soon. Until then, here's a quick recap of a few games from the recent past.

Last night was Waterfront Wednesday, the one event in Louisville that completely and consistently drains attendance at trivia. Both Molly's and The Bard's Town had 10 teams. A truly sad showing.

The Blues round was very polarizing! Teams either loved it or hated it, which is a huge improvement over last week's one hit wonders of the 60's, which was so universally hated that it is safe to say, everybody is tired of one hit wonders in the music rounds.  There won't be any of those for a long time.  The movie mash-up round was a hit!  Even if the teams didn't get the answer right, everyone enjoyed the storylines.  Overall, a great and fun week!

Over at Molly's the winning team was What Appears to be a Drawing of a Penis.  They took an early lead and never let go.  With an insane score on the last round like the one they had, we're not entirely convinced they have an actual baby in the carrier but a Google computer disguised as a baby!  Secret weapon perhaps?

At The Bard's Town, Say Our Name, Bitch won the game by 11 points. We didn't get a picture, but you can see their winning photo from last week posted below. They've won plenty of times. We had a tie breaker for second and third. Even though they didn't win (they placed fifth with two other teams), He Liked It and Put a Ring on It was by far the best team name this week. Congrats to the newly engaged couple, Anna and Michael.

Tie Breaker Question: Did you know, according to something we saw on the History Channel a few years ago, if a man uses a cell phone for four hours a day, on average, his sperm count decreases by 25%? Who knew? And we've got no clue if that's 25% reduction each day or over his lifetime. That's just the number given to us by that random TV show.


Tuesday night at The Granville it was a very close game. For the bulk of the game almost all of the teams were within 5 points of each other. Stephen Hawking Karaoke Machine started off strong with 2 perfect rounds. The first 2 rounds went over well with everyone as we had really good scores in those rounds. Things slowed down during the picture round, but it was a hard fought battle until the very end. Murder is All She Wrote took the game in the last round after playing second fiddle most of the game.

At Molly's on Tuesday, it was a good match up and one of the two teams with Duggar-themed names (19 Counts of Molestation and Counting) ended up winning after scoring 37 in the final round. We got a kick out of The Moops, though. Not surprisingly, people especially enjoyed the beer round, though the Brewer/Brewster question stumped a lot of folks, as did the beer that made Milwaukee famous.

Cinco de Mayo Recap

It was Cinco de Mayo last night, which means the crowds were a bit smaller, but we still have a few teams show up who weren't interested in the typical tequila shots and Mariachi music vibe.

At Molly's, the game went fast. With only 11 teams, it was one of the smallest crowds we've seen in a while. I maybe more focused because as I was finishing my regular bourbon and ginger ale one of the teams bought me another. Much appreciated!

The State of TV was a big hit overall, and we'll be doing that round again this week. The audio round, which was a request by one of our teams, was enjoyed by everyone who was alive in the '80s, but at least one of the teams was too young to remember many of the songs. Round Five "In Da Club" was a surprise hit, with the lowest score at 7 points. We had no clear winner throughout the game, as the lead kept changing hands. In the end, We Don't Know grabbed the win with 39 points in the final round.

It was a hectic game over at The Granville. The first three rounds went well. The music round was fun, but somewhat challenging. We had a VERY rowdy crowd show up later in the game that made the last two rounds very tough, but we got through it. For some reason the crowd hasn't been connecting with the questions as well as in the past resulting in some lower scores. If you have ideas to why, let us know! From the first round, winning team SPIT seemed to dominate the game. Unfortunately, no winning team photo this week.

ICYMI: Last Night's Recap - 4/28/15

We had a full house last night at The Granville with plenty of folks playing the game. It was a younger crowd so some of the movie questions were a bit too old for them. Scores were a bit lower than usual, and the team with the most points had too many team members. The winning team was the Honeybadgers.

Over at Molly Malone's, the crowd was smaller than usual and we had a few folks throughout the game who didn't realize they weren't supposed to yell out answers, hum the theme songs to movies, or continuously whistle to the tune of "Let's Go Yankees!" All-in-all it was a good evening, despite Scott's inability to pronounce words like chauffeur and diplopia as well as names like Blackthorne, Chatham, and Lorre. The winning team, Don't Rain on My Pegasus Parade, struggled in the beginning, but took charge in the final round and reigned (pun intended) victorious.

We had several new teams at The Granville, thanks in part to a very enthusiastic patron. One of our new teams actually took the win tonight, Smart Belwas. SPIT had the most points, but had 7 players so they did not qualify. Overall it was a great night.

At Molly Malone's we had 20 teams, several of which were new as well.  The Six Letter P Words round was a big hit. The Picture round of albums featuring animals on the covers was hit or miss. Some folks really enjoyed it, while others grunted and groaned as they turned it in. In the last round, folks were split when asked about an inscription about liberty.

At Molly's, there was quite a lot of competition, but in the end, Troll Toll gained the lead and walked away with bragging rights, even though half the team left before grabbing the gift card or a quick picture.

Wednesday Night Recap - Tax Day

Yesterday was the last day to file taxes in these great United States. As we often do, we designed a theme around that fact called "Cold. Hard. Cash." All-in-all it wasn't the best round we've ever done, but there were a ton of pop culture references, which made it fairly easy for folks. And who knew the Hungry, Hungry Hippos even had names?!

Over at Molly Malone's folks got a kick out of the picture round and Terrible Music round. Round five, which is designed to be a bit tougher, tripped a few people up. That's what we like to see. Team 309, going by the name Chipotle Burrito Bowl and 7 Limes, is the team to beat. They have won eight of the last 10 games they've played, they dominated the first five rounds this week, and there's no end in sight. We need someone to step up and challenge these guys next week!

At The Bard's Town, Chris took a hiatus to join Mark Hamill at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration. Scott took over hosting duties for the week with help from Jill, the newest addition to the Louisville Trivia team. Just like at Molly's, most of the teams enjoyed the picture round and the music round. In fact, there was some debate about just how terrible, or how amazing, some of the songs were. Round five was tough. Round six was probably a little too easy. We'll try to fix that for next week. Grumblecakes, the evening's winning team, started off with a great lead, faltered in rounds three and four when just about every other team did better than them, but that didn't matter because they came back in round six missing only one question. They were so confident, a team representative started the victory lap to grab the gift card well before it was announced they'd won.

Recap for April 14, 2015

We had a great night of trivia at both venues last night.  There were several new teams at The Granville this week and everyone enjoyed the game. Scores were a bit lower than in past weeks, but that happens from time to time. The Terrible Music round went very well as well as the Jeopardy! round. One team that pretty much led the whole time, The Smartest People at the Granville Inn, faltered in the last round.  This week's winner was Honeybadgers.

Over at Molly Malone's we started off a bit small, but all the way up to round three we just kept adding teams. We had some fun with the Massive Headaches round, despite some switched up answers. The Terrible Music round, aka Massive Headaches Part II, was a big hit. Most teams scored pretty highly on it. There were three or four teams that went head-to-head last night, but Iran (So Far Away) walked/ran away with the win.

The Night of the Badger - April 7, 2015

We didn't have much of a crowd over at The Granville last night, so we had to cancel the game. At Molly's, we had 19 teams and a full evening of badgers, insects, spiders, and snakes.

The night started with Christina Aguilera and selfie sticks. The Movie Title word puzzle riddle round was a huge success, so we'll have to try that again. If only we knew what those things are called...

With the three rounds out of the way, we had two teams with perfect games. That quickly changed.

Some folks had a hard time with the Money/Business round. The What's New Pussycat round elicited a call-back response from the crowd. We never knew you guys were such Tom Jones fans.

The last round, as it usually does, divided the scores and determined without a doubt the night's winner. Much to their own surprise, Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom earned their bragging rights and the $25 gift certificate. We'll see if they can do it again next week.

Recap - March 31

We had a packed house last night at both venues. It was probably the two Math rounds.

The Granville was rowdy, since not everyone was playing trivia (what's that about?), but we powered through. The Honeybadgers dominated the night  and had the correct number of players, so they walked away winners.

Over at Molly's we had three birthdays and a wedding anniversary to celebrate. The Slow and the Spurious were crowned the winners. After they got their winnings, they bolted, Fast and Furious-like, so this was the only picture we could get...of their empty table.

Last Night's Recap - March 24, 2015

After tons of weather issues and last week's cancellation for St. Patrick's Day, we were glad to be back last night at The Granville and Molly Malone's. The night was filled with Pop Culture Trivia, a random audio round, and some basic Indiana Jones chronology.

The winning teams from both bars were quite apparent from early on. Over at The Granville, Honeybadgers took the win. At Molly's a rowdy Werewolves, Not Scarewolves walked away victorious, even though they were about to riot during the "Vanity Fair" question. Becky Sharp is the heroine, not Becky Thatcher. That's a different book altogether.

Last Night's Recap - February 24

We had another full house at Molly Malone's last night with 20 teams, despite the series finale of Parks & Rec (thank you DVR!). The first round was a tough one. The average score was 5.75. The pace quickly picked up with Big Birdman grabbing the lead until the final round (a common problem for that crew). Bye Bye Lil' Sebastian, a team who saw second and third place throughout the game, dominated the final round and took home the win.

Over at The Granville, we had a good rebound crowd from last week's snow. The teams started out a little slow in round one with lower scores. The Honeybadgers were the first to comeback. The Inspiration round was a good round for most teams. Last week's winners, Hit It and Acquit It, made a late run, but it wasn't enough to take the win from the Honeybadgers.

Molly Malone's Recap - February 17

It's always hard to tell what we're going to get when the city is blanketed in snow. Sometimes we have one team show up and sometimes we have a full house. And that's exactly what happened last night. We had to cancel at The Granville because we had so few teams. Over at Molly's we had 19 teams show up initially. Sixteen of them finished the game.

It was a tough start, since no one got the first question right. Things smoothed out until round 3 when the Rachel McAdams picture round had Paul Rudd answers. Overall it was a good game, if not a bit harder than usual. The winning team, 50 Shades of No Chemistry, was in the lead in the first round, tapered off in the middle, and came back for the victory when it counted.

Tuesday Night Recap - February 10

Last night at The Granville, we had an abbreviated game due to the UK game on the big screens. We got in five rounds, including the hard-to-hear-in-a-crowd audio round.

Meanwhile, at Molly Malone's in St. Matthews, we played the full game, but took a quick break to watch the Wildcats eek out another win in their undefeated season. The inappropriate innuendo-laced picture round seemed to go over well. We need to get you folks reading more books, though.

The winners this week at The Granville were Hit It & Acquit It with a perfect score in the final round. Over at Molly's, We Don't Know walked away victorious, also with a perfect score in the final round.

Molly Malone's Recap - February 3

We had a lot going on tonight at Molly Malone's. There were two basketball games on the TVs and the place was full with 19 teams. There also happened to be several Super Bowl-themed team names and a few very specific Katy Perry/Shark team names.

The first few rounds went fairly well. There was some confusion about the "Birthstones" round. That usually happens with a themed picture round. We'll work on it. (Next week should prove to be interesting...) Round 4 was hit or miss. The average score was 5. Round 5 was the real doozy. Movies from before 1990. Average score? 3.1 In Round 6, we learned about Enterprise, Alabama and the devastation and redemption caused by the boll weevil.

Tonight's winning team, Jumping the Left Shark, dominated the final round and walked away victorious. Can they do it again next week?

Four Pegs Recap - Super Bowl Edition

There are exactly 10 people that we know of in Louisville who don't care about the outcome of the Super Bowl. That's how many people showed up to play trivia tonight. Three teams. Ten people. Lots of fun. I guess we'll all just watch the commercials online tomorrow.

This group was all about song lyrics and Simpsons trivia. Sports? Not so much.

Team Game showed up ready to dominate. They had a lot of heart, but sadly ended up in third place with 51 points. Second place (apparently perpetually so) went to The Dumb Kids with 58 points. Grabbing first tonight with 59 points was Team Shah.

Tuesday Night Recap - January 27

Much like last week, The Granville had a smaller, more intimate crowd with a close game at the end. The "Man"-O-"Man" and Just for Kicks rounds seemed to be the easiest and/or most fun rounds of the night. A visiting team from DiOrio's, Hit It and Acquit It, snagged with win by six points.

At Molly's, Say Car Ramrod led for the first half, then was overtaken by We Don't Know (who won last Wednesday night). There were far more folks than we realized that have read the Fifty Shades book series. You guys got the question right, but what's that say about your taste in literature? In the end, the Snow DMins walked away victorious, three points ahead of their rivalries, the Snow Angels.

Molly Malone's Recap - January 13

After a change in the schedule, there was no game at The Granville Inn tonight. Maybe next week.

Our only game took place at Molly Malone's with a full house. A total of 17 teams battled for bragging rights and a $25 gift certificate. Butt Mustache Lundergan-Grimes took home the win with a lead of 12 points. They're also currently tied for first in league rankings.

 

We had a quick debate about oleo, mayo, and EVOO; it was discovered soccer fields and field hockey fields are slightly different; and The Breakfast Club consisted of a Brain, Athlete, Basket Case, Princess, and Criminal.
