ICYMI: Last Night's Recap - 4/28/15

We had a full house last night at The Granville with plenty of folks playing the game. It was a younger crowd so some of the movie questions were a bit too old for them. Scores were a bit lower than usual, and the team with the most points had too many team members. The winning team was the Honeybadgers.

Honeybadgers

Over at Molly Malone's, the crowd was smaller than usual and we had a few folks throughout the game who didn't realize they weren't supposed to yell out answers, hum the theme songs to movies, or continuously whistle to the tune of "Let's Go Yankees!" All-in-all it was a good evening, despite Scott's inability to pronounce words like chauffeur and diplopia as well as names like Blackthorne, Chatham, and Lorre. The winning team, Don't Rain on My Pegasus Parade, struggled in the beginning, but took charge in the final round and reigned (pun intended) victorious.

4/26/15 Four Peg Recap

We had a smaller crowd this week due to the beautiful Spring weather. When the final decision came down on whether to continue with the game or not, Four Pegs decided it was a go to reward the dedicated teams who were there to have a great time with another great round of trivia. With a smaller crowd even the bartenders were able to become part of the fun. We had a pretty close game with the final score only separating 1st and 2nd place by just a few points. After everything was settled our winner was Laissez Bear. Laissez has been a staple at Four Pegs for awhile now always adding a twist to their Bear name. It was a hard fought win and well deserved. Congratulations, Lassiez Bear!

DiOrio's Scores - Beercat Strikes Again

Beercat is on a roll. They've quickly taken charge over at Four Peg Beer Lounge, winning a majority of the games in the past couple of months. Last night they paid a visit to DiOrio's Pizza and Pub and dominated once again. That's two wins in one week. They're virtually unstoppable. Or are they?

Last Night's Recap - Darn You Waterfront Wednesday

One of the great things about living in Louisville is that there is always something to do. Last night's weather was amazing and just so happened to be the kickoff of this year's Waterfront Wednesday. How do you compete with that? Attendance at trivia was a bit lower than usual, but we deal.

We had a fun game (don't we usually?) Chris was back at The Bard's Town from a nice trip to California, we had a one-hit wonders round from the '90s. It was just magical. One woman at Molly's yelled out "RUMPSHAKER!" when that song started to play. We let that one slide.

Team 309 was a no-show at Molly's, so we had a new champion creatively named Ice Bank Mice Elf. At The Bard's Town, frequent winning team Six Hour Peacock grabbed the win.

Quick Recap from 4/21/15 - Molly's and Granville

We had several new teams at The Granville, thanks in part to a very enthusiastic patron. One of our new teams actually took the win tonight, Smart Belwas. SPIT had the most points, but had 7 players so they did not qualify. Overall it was a great night.

Smart Belwas

At Molly Malone's we had 20 teams, several of which were new as well.  The Six Letter P Words round was a big hit. The Picture round of albums featuring animals on the covers was hit or miss. Some folks really enjoyed it, while others grunted and groaned as they turned it in. In the last round, folks were split when asked about an inscription about liberty.

Liberty Bell Inscription (click to enlarge)

At Molly's, there was quite a lot of competition, but in the end, Troll Toll gained the lead and walked away with bragging rights, even though half the team left before grabbing the gift card or a quick picture.

Google-Proof Trivia - Movie Monday #10

This is our 10th Movie Monday. Hopefully by now you guys know how it works. If not, see below.

First, identify the movies. Then, identify the relevant cast member from each movie. Once you have both of those, figure out the sixth movie that all five cast members have in common. The only answer we truly need is that sixth movie. Today, it might be a bit easier than usual, and one of these screenshots has already been used. Good luck!

Sunday Showers Bring New Teams to Trivia Night

Sunday April 19, 2015 - Four Pegs

We had a great crowd again this week at Four Pegs. We had several new teams and several returning teams. The game started out great for our teams and several of them kept the momentum rolling throughout the game. As a matter of fact, 1 point separated the top teams for most of our rounds and there were several lead changes. Going into our sixth and final round it was anyone's game. Most of the teams scored very similarly in the final round, but our winner, Beercat, took the game with a monster score of 44 in the last round. Lately, it is looking like Beercat is the team to beat. They better not get too comfortable though, there are a lot of teams looking to take over as King of the Mountain.

On Failing the Online Jeopardy! Test

Scott here. Owner and Quizmaster of Louisville Trivia. I just took my second Jeopardy! test.

My first test was back in 2000 or 2001 while I was in college. I had to drive 45 minutes to a mall, stand in line with a buddy of mine (he's the guy with the sports questions in that article) and his then-girlfriend for what seemed like an eternity. It may have only been 15 minutes, but when you're about to try out for a major production such as this, you have every right to be nervous. Right?

It didn't work out for me or my buddy or his girlfriend for that matter. We never made it on TV or met Alex Trebek. It just wasn't meant to be. On the way home, that long 45 minute drive back to campus, we discussed our tests. Each was different from the others. My most vivid memory of that trip was explaining to my fellow travelers the difficulty of a particular "Crossword Clue," now one of my favorite rounds to create for Louisville Trivia. It was a six-letter word. It started with "P." It was "Another word for a headrest." I explained how I stared at that clue. I drew nothing but blanks. No word came to me until finally, out of the blue, by some magical whim, I wrote "PODIUM."

Immediately, laughter erupted from the two people I had just shared this moment of weakness with, and now they were forming tears of utter joy because of my pain. One of them, it doesn't really matter which one, screamed out. "Pillow! Duh!!" From that day, that stupid clue has haunted me. And it all came back tonight.

The second time I took the Jeopardy! test was tonight, April 16, 2015. The setting couldn't have been more different. I'm now 13 years out of college. I'm married with two children. I still talk to my buddy fairly regularly, but I haven't seen him in at least a year. I didn't have to drive 45 minutes away to fill out a piece of paper. I simply walked to my basement office, logged onto my computer, and heard the famous Think Music as the last 30 seconds ticked down in front of me and the very first of 50 questions popped up. It was an easy one about Zelda Fitzgerald. Just last night I discussed F. Scott and Zelda with the crowd at The Bard's Town. This was going to be a cake walk. In fact, I'm fairly certain I got a majority of the first 31 questions correct. It wasn't until Clue #32 that history repeated itself.

Damn you, Clue #32!
Clue #32.  Another six-letter crossword clue starting with the letter "P." We meet again! This time, with only 15 seconds to answer each clue, I panicked. Sadly, I didn't even type a response. The pressure was just too much. I finished the test about the same way I started it. I missed a few questions, but I did better than I expected I would.

I have to say, I'm actually pretty proud of my performance, though I doubt I'll be getting a call to move to the next round. I've come to terms with the fact that I may never be on Jeopardy!. I'm not upset. In fact, I'm quite the opposite. If only there was a word for that...

Wednesday Night Recap - Tax Day

Yesterday was the last day to file taxes in these great United States. As we often do, we designed a theme around that fact called "Cold. Hard. Cash." All-in-all it wasn't the best round we've ever done, but there were a ton of pop culture references, which made it fairly easy for folks. And who knew the Hungry, Hungry Hippos even had names?!

Over at Molly Malone's folks got a kick out of the picture round and Terrible Music round. Round five, which is designed to be a bit tougher, tripped a few people up. That's what we like to see. Team 309, going by the name Chipotle Burrito Bowl and 7 Limes, is the team to beat. They have won eight of the last 10 games they've played, they dominated the first five rounds this week, and there's no end in sight. We need someone to step up and challenge these guys next week!

At The Bard's Town, Chris took a hiatus to join Mark Hamill at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration. Scott took over hosting duties for the week with help from Jill, the newest addition to the Louisville Trivia team. Just like at Molly's, most of the teams enjoyed the picture round and the music round. In fact, there was some debate about just how terrible, or how amazing, some of the songs were. Round five was tough. Round six was probably a little too easy. We'll try to fix that for next week. Grumblecakes, the evening's winning team, started off with a great lead, faltered in rounds three and four when just about every other team did better than them, but that didn't matter because they came back in round six missing only one question. They were so confident, a team representative started the victory lap to grab the gift card well before it was announced they'd won.

Recap for April 14, 2015

Adam Driver is not Keanu Reeves.

We had a great night of trivia at both venues last night.  There were several new teams at The Granville this week and everyone enjoyed the game. Scores were a bit lower than in past weeks, but that happens from time to time. The Terrible Music round went very well as well as the Jeopardy! round. One team that pretty much led the whole time, The Smartest People at the Granville Inn, faltered in the last round.  This week's winner was Honeybadgers.

Honeybadgers wear their sunglasses at night!

Over at Molly Malone's we started off a bit small, but all the way up to round three we just kept adding teams. We had some fun with the Massive Headaches round, despite some switched up answers. The Terrible Music round, aka Massive Headaches Part II, was a big hit. Most teams scored pretty highly on it. There were three or four teams that went head-to-head last night, but Iran (So Far Away) walked/ran away with the win.

Iran (So Far Away)

We threw in one more music question at the end to test your knowledge. Some of you did well in identifying the musical supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys. Here they are with "End of the Line."

    Movie Monday Answers #9

Congratulations to winner, Anna Saltsgaver. Here are your answers for Movie Monday #9. The final movie was Toy Story.

    Toy Story
The first movie was The Beverly Hillbillies with the late, great Jim Varney. The second movie was Gandhi featuring John Ratzenberger. The third movie was Ghostbusters with Annie Potts. The fourth movie was Kelly's Heroes with Don Rickles. The last movie was The Princess Bride with Shawn Wallace.

    Four Pegs Recap 4/12/15

We had a beautiful end to the weekend this Sunday and that included a great round of trivia.  We had great scores the first couple of rounds, some were even perfect. Scores were very tight through out the game. It wasn't until the fifth round that we saw some separation in the teams.

This week saw some highs and lows. Round two, "There is no such thing as a stupid answer" had some of the best questions. As the host, this round was by far my favorite. It was doubly hard to keep a straight face while asking the questions.  Round four brought a collective groan from the teams when one of questions from the song round was replayed. For those who weren't there, enjoy.

After all the questions were read, and all of the scores were tallied it was Beercat who took the crown again this week.

The Night of the Badger - April 7, 2015

We didn't have much of a crowd over at The Granville last night, so we had to cancel the game. At Molly's, we had 19 teams and a full evening of badgers, insects, spiders, and snakes.

The night started with Christina Aguilera and selfie sticks. The Movie Title word puzzle riddle round was a huge success, so we'll have to try that again. If only we knew what those things are called...

With the three rounds out of the way, we had two teams with perfect games. That quickly changed.

Some folks had a hard time with the Money/Business round. The What's New Pussycat round elicited a call-back response from the crowd. We never knew you guys were such Tom Jones fans.

The last round, as it usually does, divided the scores and determined without a doubt the night's winner. Much to their own surprise, Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom earned their bragging rights and the $25 gift certificate. We'll see if they can do it again next week.

    Four Pegs Recap 4/6/15

Last night we had a smaller crowd than normal since it was Easter, but we still had a few dedicated teams that celebrated the holiday with Louisville Trivia. It was a very tight game from start to finish with a new team, Hell's Bells, Trudy! giving our veteran teams everything that they could handle. It did appear that Round 4 may have been similar to a round that we have recently had at Four Pegs, but most of the teams scored very well so no one got an unfair advantage.

By far the crowd favorite had to be our Tough but Sensitive round. There was a point of contention after the game with one of the questions in that round. Apparently, The Terminator is not just a Schwarzenegger movie, it is also a brand of condom.

After all of the questions were read and all the answers tabulated our winner was Beercat, reclaiming their place at the top.

    Recap - March 31

We had a packed house last night at both venues. It was probably the two Math rounds.

The Granville was rowdy, since not everyone was playing trivia (what's that about?), but we powered through. The Honeybadgers dominated the night  and had the correct number of players, so they walked away winners.

    Honeybadgers

Over at Molly's we had three birthdays and a wedding anniversary to celebrate. The Slow and the Spurious were crowned the winners. After they got their winnings, they bolted, Fast and Furious-like, so this was the only picture we could get...of their empty table.

    Slow and Spurious' Empty Table
